Vaginal Candida: what is it?

Candida albicans

CANDIDA ALBICANS: WHAT IS IT?

Candida albicans is a yeast that belongs to the class of Saccharomyces. It is normally present in the oral cavity, intestine and vagina as a saprophyte without any annoying clinical manifestation.

It can become pathogenic in particular conditions such as pregnancy, antibiotic abuse and stress. In these cases, particularly at the vaginal level, Candida albicans transforms into the pathogenic form (hyphal form) and adheres to the vaginal epithelium with the production of enzymes responsible for the inflammatory process.

VAGINITIS FROM CANDIDA ALBICANS: RELAPSES

Candida albicans vaginitis is one of the most common vaginal infections, representing around 50% of all cases of infectious vulvovaginitis.  It manifests as a white, curd-like vaginal discharge, odourless and with severe itching and significant inflammation of the external genitalia.

Candida albicans vaginitis is very common in the female population, about 75% of women suffer from it at least once in their lifetime and relapses occurring after the first episode are very common. Particularly significant is the fact that 4-8% of women suffer from recurring Candida albicans vaginitis at least 4 times a year.

VAGINITIS FROM CANDIDA ALBICANS: THE THERAPY

Treatment involves the use of specific antifungals for topical use (ova or cream) for 7-14 days or the use of systemic antifungals for 1-3 days.

The therapy for recurrent Candida albicans vaginitis is more complex with the presence of at least 4 episodes per year. In these cases, basic treatment is recommended, which must be combined with oral antifungal treatment for at least 6 months.

SACCHAROMYCES CEREVISIAE CNCM I-3856 AND RECURRING VAGINITIS

Saccharomyces Cerevisie is a healthy yeast normally used in the food industry for its ability to ferment sugars. Saccharomyces Cerevisiae CNCM I-3856 is a specific strain specially selected and studied, both at a microbiological and clinical level, to restore the balance of thee vaginal flora.

In particular, this yeast strain has been the subject of a clinical study that has demonstrated a probiotic activity that antagonizes Candida albicans and accelerates the restoration of normal vaginal flora, improving its functionality and physiological state and consequently limiting the possibility of new external aggressions by other potentially harmful yeasts such as Candida albicans.

Therefore, these studies demonstrate that taking Saccharomyces Cerevisiae CNCM I-3856 makes drug treatment with antifungals more effective and prevents recurrence of relapses while simultaeously limiting the inflammation of the vagina.

SACCHAROMYCES CEREVISIAE CNCM I-3856 AND PREGNANCY

Candida vaginitis is particularly common in pregnancy, in fact it effects about 1 in 3 women. Saccharomyces Cerevisiae CNCM I-3856 has no side effects and can be used safely during pregnancy.
