A vast body of international literature has documented how Vitamin C exerts beneficial effects on both innate and acquired immune responses; studies show that altered values of immune parameters, as observed in Vitamin C-deficient individuals, the elderly, patients exposed to toxic chemical substances, and subjects undergoing intense physical exercise, can be restored through Vitamin C intake.
A recently published work reports that a meta-analysis study (a clinical/statistical method that allows for combining data from multiple studies on the same topic to generate a single conclusive result) demonstrates significant risk reductions during respiratory tract infections with Vitamin C supplementation.
Intake of 200 mg/day is recommended for healthy subjects and up to 1.2 g for those who are ill.
